City Centre Contemporary Garden.

Norwich City centre and golden triangle terraced gardens are suited to modern design styles, where clean, simple lines make garden spaces feel bigger and detract from the rectangular box shape of the typical plot. We designed this garden in the Golden Triangle to be low maintenance and to accommodate an outdoor lifestyle for a young family who liked plants but did not want to ‘do gardening’. We were able to use a range of plants that required no knowledge of gardening and almost no care at all, but that would make a lush green retreat with colour and scent too.

We used artificial grass and slate mulched beds for practically zero maintenance with an irrigation system running below the mulch that is controlled by a digital timer to take care of watering. Our Brazilian slate paving and white painted rendered walls provide the modern contemporary look and two Balau hardwood decks complement the look with a slightly softer colour and feel.

We used two very special species of bamboo in different positions that will provide screening and evergreen foliage even in the depths of winter. The upright swaying stems (or culms) bring movement and a soft texture to the garden and our specialist knowledge of bamboo allowed us to chose non invasive types that will form clumps of different heights – one species will only reach about 3m tall and the other about 5m, (you can see how quickly the bamboo has matured in the two photos below right - with the far right picture taken just 12 months later) The planting was confined to angular spaces around the artificial grass lawn, which has a strong rectangular shape, set at a striking angle to the walls of the garden. The strong diagonal lines of the artificial grass detract from the parallel walls of the garden and make the garden feel bigger by introducing a strong form and identity to the average terraced garden shape.
