Schefflera impressa.
Left - Seen growing here in the beautiful Arduaine garden on the west coast of Scotland, . The evergreen compound leaves look like many tropical plants but have been untouched by temperatures of -8 c for short periods. The plants we are reffering to are in the Carribean Home From Home garden in south London and also withstand root competition from Eucalyptus, thriving without any damage or protection from the winters for 7 years. This is a shrubby species at first branching from a young age in the right conditions, possibly becoming tree like later in life. It seems to be the hardiest of the genus which includes S. dealbata and Taiwaniana that are almost as hardy.
Right - This plant is also growing in the rainforest like Arduaine and has not yet been identified.
You can find Arduaine and many other great gardens listed on a really useful website gardens-guide.com, essential for anyone who, like us loves visiting gardens, see their link on our Resources Page.
Left - We have included this wonderful unknown species because it has reached a large size and shows how S.impressa could look, almost as tropical, when it gets this big. We are in the process of trying to identify this plant and hope that it will be as hardy and also make its way into nurseries as S. impressa did.
Right - another shot of S. impressa. More photos to follow.
