Melianthus major

Melianthus major.
A showy fast growing stately looking shrub with large feather shaped (pinnate) leaves up to 80cm long which are silvery grey and have finely serrated edges, they contrast nicely with what would otherwise be quited a dull brown/burgundy coloured flower. The flower spikes are honey scented and drip nectar profusely which can stain paving and clothing - it is used to make a violet dye in it's native S. Africa and India. The leaves emit a strong aroma of peanut when crushed or brushed against.
This is an easy plant to grow with rapid growth and flowering from an early age, it may reach 3m tall but will almost certainly be a leggy plant by this stage as seen in the photos above. It will also require support once taller than 1.5m unless you are happy for the plant to lean towards the light, it may be cut back hard to rejuvenate the plant so that it forms a compact bush again. It may produce suckers and in some Mediterranean climates has become an invasive pest.
Melianthus major is reasonably hardy and stays evergreen in mild winters, below -5 or 6c it will lose its leaves and perhaps have some stem damage. It may lose all of its top growth in lower temperatures and below -8 a mulch of manure should be applied to the base of the plant to be sure of root survival so that the plant can re shoot from ground level the following season. Melainthus are happy in most soils but grow best in a light, poor sandy soil flowering more profusely in full sun, although they will tolerate some shade.
