Hibiscus moscheutos 'Galaxy'

Alternative text

Hibiscus moscheutos 'Galaxy'.  This species is originally from wetlands in north America. The selection 'Galaxy' has a range of different coloured flowers from deep maroon to pink/white which can be as much as 18cm wide. We first saw this plant in its variety 'Southern Belle' which has dark purple/maroon flowers 25cm accross, so far we have not managed to find it in the UK, although 'Galaxy' seems to be fairly common. This shrub is completely herbaceous in the UK, dying right back to ground level every winter, it may be killed if temperatures of -8 or below are prolonged or if the ground freezes for more that 1 or 2 nights. It has survived in London for 5 or 6 years now and is worth growing even if it only lasts 2 seasons.
