Daphniphyllum macropodum.
An evergreen shrub from Japan. It looks at its best when grown in light woodland shade where its leaves are bigger and a darker green, it also prefers a woodland character of soil - cool, rich in humus and moisture retentive. It will survive and grow rapidly in full sun but look less lush and healthy. When this plant is happy and growing vigorously the new shoots are flushed with red, the colour persists longer the more vigorous the plant is. The flowers are not at all showy and its appeal is in the heavy large leaved character. It forms a compact shrub possibly reaching the size of a small tree. Photo of large plant to follow.
