Coccothrinax crinata
The 'Old Man' palm from cuba is probably the hairiest plant of any kind. It is hardy enough to grow in Mediterranean climates and although it is relatively slow growing it is reliable and quite tough.
The fibres on it's trunk can be relatively short like the ones in this photo or much longer making the crown of leaves the appearance of sitting on top of a haystack. This young plant is growing in the palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
