Aesculus pavia 'Astrosanguinea'.
An attractive dark red flowered form of the 'Red Buckeye'. It grows slowly and usually stays single stemmed, at a shrub-like size of around 2m which suits the display of leaf and flower. As the new leaves open they are and intense deep red and sometimes keep this colour as the flowers emerge, and are best appreciated when viewed at close quarters. The specimens in these photos growing at the English Country Garden in Berkshire were grafted onto dwarfing rootstock which kept them at a small size as standards with a clear trunk.
