Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom'
This plant is growing in the English Country Garden and has thrived there for 10 years flowering reliably profusely every season. As evergreen climbers go this is one of the best with large leaves 12cm long by 8 wide which are attractively ribbed and glossy, with profuse flowering over along period in early spring and sometimes a sparser or intermitent late flowering. Originally from China there are now several named varieties, this one - 'Apple Blossom' is probably the most scented and has flowers that are flushed pink on the back of the petals. This is a fairly rampant twining climber which needs some space or regular control. It's only drawback is that it will carry quite a lot of dead leaf and have some patchy brown leaves, even when in rude health, although this only really shows up at close quarters. It will thrive in most soils and light shade, being more floriferous in full sun. Although hardy - cold winds will cause leaf browning so perhaps it's ideal position would beon a sheltered wall or fence.
