Acer 'Beni Otake'
Left - growing in the Garden Of 5 Arches this beautiful small tree brings the architecture and form of a large tree into the garden at a minature scale, a little like 'lifesize' bonsai. With purple foliage all season that turns red before dropping, this tree is compact and attractive enough to fit in with other plants in a composition or stand alone as a focal point.
Right - Acers are very adaptable and can grow in neutral to slightly acid soil and even tolerate very slightly alkaline soil if there is a layer of humus present. They will adapt to relatively full sun although the delicate leaves with deeper red and purple colours are best in dappled shade.
