Cardiocrinum giganteum

Cardiocrinum giganteum.
This huge lily from the Himalayas is a true show stopper. It grows from a bulb that slowly gets to the size of a football and produces a clump of 30cm wide heart shaped leaves early in the spring. They are shiny, purple veined and impressive looking as they emerge - a feature in themselves. The bulbs take a few years to reach flowering size, (they can be bought at close to flowering age - so a long wait is not necessary), after flowering the mature bulb dies but not before producing several bulblets to replace it. The ivory white flowers can be up to 25cm long and marked with dark purple stripes, their scent is very strong and on a warm summer evening practically intoxicating. This amazing plant is happy in fairly deep shade but will flourish in some sun.

The plants in the photo are seen here growing in the superb East Ruston Old Vicarage garden in north Norfolk UK, visit their website fom our Resources Page.
