Psuedosasa japonica

Psuedosasa japonica
The 'Japanese Arrow Bamboo' is one of the easiest of all bamboos to grow. It will even grow in deep shade under trees, albiet slowly, it will grow in very wet conditions but not waterlogged soil and is very hardy. This is a running bamboo and in favourable conditions it will be vigorously invasive sending many running rhizomes out in all directions. It has a useful compact habit making a bushy dense clump of slender stems with a maximum height of about 6m with broad exotic looking leaves. The clump below has been pruned of dead culms and lower leaves to show its decorative culms, which retain their protective sheaths making a striped pattern. We have used this bamboo for 20 years in many gardens, a good example is growing in the Tropic of Henstead on one side of the decking platforms that ascend to the Thai Pavilion.
