Left - emerging from the jungle. Even in a small space it is possible to create separate areas like this dense jungle walk at the back of the garden. The pond has a safety plastic grid that is just below the surface of the water.
Right - the Cordylines in front here with trunks make an architectural frame for the bridge over the pond and the heavier jungle foliage beyond. The red leaves of Fasicularia bicolor add to the composition.
Left - the deck is situated in the ideal westerly postion to catch the after work evening sun. Ginger flowers scent this area and the 'Zen' path leads down to the lawns, bridge over pond and jungle.
Right - the lawns provide planty of running around space for the children of the house, surrounded by the plants that are the pleasure of the elder residents.
Left - low evergreen planting frames the path and steps as you leave the deck - Pittosporum tobira 'Nanum' on the left and Pittosporum 'Tom Thumb' with the purple leaves on the right.
Right - the 'Zen' path is made with natural stones to force you to pay attention to your footfalls - so taking your mind off of restless thoughts and into the here and now.
Top left - 90% of the foliage in this photo is evergreen. Only one of the plants, a Callistemon or 'bottlebrush' from Australia, is in flower - there are another four plants in the photo all of which will come into flower at different times.
Below left and right - a view from the jungle. The heavy foliage and shade in this part of the garden make a cool contrast to the hotter more colourful area seen above. The low level planting or 'understory' is an important part of this composition formed here by the 'Arum Lily' Zantadeschia aethiopica.
